RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in
NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.
100 Deadliest Days of Summer
This week begins the 100 deadliest days of summer, when the number of crash fatalities involving teenage drivers rises. More people, including teens, travel between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and with COVID restrictions easing, more people are expected to be on the roads than last year.
The
Governor’s Highway Safety Program is reminding parents, teachers and caretakers to talk to young people about being safe on the road. Speeding, distractions and drinking while driving are leading contributors to crashes involving teenage drivers – and all are preventable.

department's website.
Construction Equipment Hands-On Training
NCDOT is working hard to train women, minorities and others in the skills they will need for jobs in the highway construction industry.
In Craven County this week, more than a dozen James City Highway Construction Trade Academy students participated in NCDOT’s On-the-Job Training Heavy Equipment Class. The class seeks to grow a diverse and highly skilled workforce in the transportation industry.
This week, students were in the classroom and had the opportunity to practice operation techniques, inspections and proper maintenance and safety for machinery. The graduates of the program will go on to interview with local contractors.
