This Week at NCDOT: National Vehicle Theft Prevention Month and Zoysia Grass Study

RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.

National Vehicle Theft Prevention Month

Since 1921, the N.C. License and Theft Bureau has been working to prevent car theft and fraud. As we celebrate the bureau’s centennial year, here are a few tips to remain safe:

  • Always lock your car and keep all important belongings with you.
  • Park in secure and safe areas.
  • Invest in anti-theft devices.
  • Never leave your car unattended and running.

“Theft and fraud prevention starts with you," says License and Theft Inspector Hannah Grimes. "Be safe, be smart and always lock up.”

Zoysia Grass Study

To reduce mowing costs and improve roadside aesthetics, NCDOT and NC State University researchers are partnering to determine the most cost-efficient means of planting zoysia grass along roadside medians.

Zoysia is a warm-season turf species, meaning it requires virtually no maintenance during the winter months. It outcompetes weeds, is drought tolerant and thrives in a variety of soils.

NCDOT and NC State have selected several varieties of zoysia to determine which would be most cost efficient. In addition, the department is using state of the art machinery that sheds rolls of zoysia, to plant it in one pass.
