HICKORY – This week, N.C. Department of Transportation crews will temporarily close a section of Interstate 40 East in Catawba County for several nights to resume emergency road work.
Starting Thursday, the interstate will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. near Exit 121 while crews repair the outside beam on the Old Shelby Road bridge. The repairs are needed after a vehicle crash damaged the structure last week. Work is expected to be complete by Aug. 3.
Traffic will be detoured to the Exit 121 off-ramp and back down the entrance ramp for I-40 to go around the worksite.
Motorists should use caution while approaching the work zone and expect some delays.
