I-40 Widening Set to Begin in Orange County

RALEIGH – A major interstate improvements project will begin soon in Orange County thanks to a design-build contract awarded by the N.C. Department of Transportation.

Nearly 11.5 miles of Interstate 40 are set to be widened to six lanes between I-85 and the Durham County line. The project also includes modifying interchanges along this stretch

Adding the lanes in Orange County will satisfy project goals of improving traffic flow and safety along this corridor, which becomes heavily congested during peak driving times. It will also mean drivers will have at least three lanes in either direction of I-40 between Johnston and Guilford counties.

The Lane Construction Corporation was recently awarded the contract with the lowest bid, $236,457,869.

Construction is expected to begin in 2022 and be complete by 2025.

Drivers are urged to obey all posted traffic signs and remain alert in this stretch of the interstate as crews will be working close to the travel lanes for the duration of this project.
