CLAYTON — N.C. Department of Transportation contractors plan to close Interstate 40 West at N.C. 42 (Exit 312) tonight as a part of the Complete 540 project.
Crews will close I-40 West for up to five hours beginning at midnight to allow crews to safely install girders on the future New Bethel Church Road bridge over I-40.
The existing New Bethel Church Road bridge is being replaced to make way for the new turbine interchange design being built at the convergence of I-40, U.S. 70 and N.C. 540.
During the closure, traffic will be detoured to take Exit 312 and N.C. 42 West and N.C. 50 North to U.S. 70 East back to I-40 West.
Additionally, traffic will not be able to get on I-40 West from U.S. 70 at Exit 309 from 10:30 p.m. until 5 a.m. tomorrow.
Motorists need to slow down and pay extra attention as they travel through the work zone and allow extra time for the detour.
