RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in
NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.
Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Outreach
The N.C. Department of Transportation’s Division of Highways, in partnership with its Office of Civil Rights, is encouraging disadvantaged business enterprises to compete for state transportation contracts.
Last weekend, NCDOT hosted outreach events in seven of its 14 highway divisions statewide.
Agency staff helped small, minority- and women-owned firms learn about how they can do business with NCDOT. These opportunities include contracts for construction and maintenance, mowing, litter pickup, tree cutting, and snow and ice removal.
On Sept. 25, NCDOT will host events at its other seven highway divisions. To RSVP or learn more, visit

Rail Safety Week
This year, 17 people have died either by walking on tracks or being struck by a train at a railroad crossing in North Carolina.
Rail Safety Week (Sept. 20-26) works to increase public about railroad safety to help end preventable deaths and injuries.
To keep you and your loved ones safe, always follow these safety tips:
- When approaching a railway intersection, keep your car safely behind the white lines and never drive around the gate.
- Never stop your car on a railroad track. If it stalls, get out!
- Never race a train to a crossing.
- And remember: Trains always have the right-of-way, even when law enforcement and emergency vehicles are involved.
