Changes at I-440/Western Boulevard Interchange Continue

RALEIGH — N.C. Department of Transportation contract crews have additional work planned at the Western Boulevard interchange this weekend as a part of the Interstate 440 Improvements Project.

At 9 p.m. tonight, the onramp from westbound Western Boulevard to I-440 West will close. This ramp currently merges with the fast lane of Beltline traffic.

Also at 9 p.m., westbound Western Boulevard will be closed at the interchange, meaning both left turn lanes from the I-440 East ramp to Western Boulevard will be closed as well. Additionally, eastbound Western Boulevard will be in a single-lane configuration under I-440.

During the closures, drivers will be detoured onto I-440 East and Hillsborough Street (Exit 3) to turn around and get on I-440 West and to go west of the interchange on Western Boulevard.

All lanes of Western Boulevard under I-440 will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday.

This change is the latest in a series of steps to convert this junction to a diverging diamond interchange (DDI).

Pending weather, both directions of Western Boulevard traffic under I-440 will be closed next weekend to allow crews to safely complete asphalt paving and lane striping operations with the interchange reopening in the DDI pattern by 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 15, in time for the morning commute.

Motorists should slow down and pay attention throughout the work zone, particularly as they get used to the new driving pattern at the Western Boulevard interchange.
