Contract Awarded to Improve Bridges in Three Counties

LEXINGTON – Two bridges will be replaced and upgraded in Rowan, Stanly and Davidson counties thanks to a recently awarded contract.

The N.C. Department of Transportation awarded a contract worth about $13.8 million to Smith-Rowe, LLC of Mount Airy to replace and perform preservation work on the two bridges that carry N.C. 8/49 over the Yadkin River and the Winston-Salem Southbound Railroad.

Crews may begin work on these bridges as early as Feb. 1, 2022 and all work is expected to be complete by January 28, 2025.

Traffic will be maintained onsite during construction since N.C. 8/49 is a regional commuter route with about 7,000 vehicles using the bridges every day.
