NC Quick Pass and Triangle Expressway Celebrate 10 Years of Travel

Since the launch of NC Quick Pass November 2011, nearly 395 million transactions have occurred on the Triangle Expressway and over one million NC Quick Pass transponders have been issued

RALEIGH – NC Quick Pass, the toll collection program managed by the North Carolina Turnpike Authority (NCTA), is celebrating ten years of service. NC Quick Pass was one of the first toll collection programs to open as all-electronic, which means no toll booths and more reliable travel times for customers. NC Quick Pass is the toll collection program for the Monroe Expressway and Triangle Expressway. The N.C. Department of Transportation’s contract with I-77 Mobility Partners also tasks NCTA and NC Quick Pass to provide account management, billing and customer service for the I-77 express lanes.

“I am especially proud of the team as we work to support projects that give our customers more time to do what they love,” said Turnpike Authority Executive Director J.J. Eden. “We are dedicated to improving the NC Quick Pass program to make our customer experience the very best it can be during a trip on one of our facilities and after.”

NC Quick Pass has grown and made significant improvements for customers. Since first opening in 2011, NC Quick Pass has opened three walk-in locations in Morrisville, Monroe and Charlotte. In 2017, NC Quick Pass reduced all transponder prices and began issuing a free transponder for customers. Since 2017, nearly 500k sticker transponders have been provided to travelers. NC Quick Pass has also introduced the NC Quick Pass HOV app that allows customers to set High Occupancy Vehicle HOV status and travel in the I-77 express lanes for free when there are at least three or more people in the vehicle, including the driver. Customers that travel on a North Carolina toll facility receive a 35 percent discount on their tolls.

The Triangle Expressway was the first modern toll facility in North Carolina’s history. This major roadway quickly became one of the most technologically advanced roadways in the country. The first phase of the Triangle Expressway opened in December 2011, the second phase opened in August 2012 year and phase three opened in December 2012. Since the initial opening nearly 395 million transactions have been taken on the Triangle Expressway. Two additional interchanges have been built since 2011 including the Veridea Parkway Interchange which opened in 2017 and the Morrisville Parkway Interchange which opened in 2019. The road has been equipped with advanced Wrong-Way Vehicle detection systems at on and off ramps which provides a series of early warnings to the State Transportation Operations Center and drivers on the road. NCTA has also taken its financial responsibilities for the facility with the utmost care. NCTA has completed six refunding efforts for the Triangle Expressway resulting in total net present value savings of nearly $120 million.
