Downtown Wilmington Intersection to See Safety Improvements

WILMINGTON – Drivers can expect intermittent lane closures around a downtown intersection while a raised median is extended on South Third Street, or U.S. 17 Business.

Contract crews will improve the safety of pedestrians and drivers who use this road's junction with Dock Street, where drivers can now go right, left or straight when it's clear to proceed.

By extending an existing median on South Third Street, drivers on Dock Street will be redirected into turning right – a safer maneuver, given the 22,000 vehicles typically traveling through the corridor each day.

The project will include the addition of a marked crosswalk and allow pedestrians to wait in the median, if necessary, while crossing South Third Street, which does not have a traffic signal at this location.

The contractor is expected to begin work on Jan. 24, but won't need to initiate any lane closures until about a week later. Drivers will encounter off-and-on lane closures on South Third Street near Dock Street from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, starting near the end of January; some occasional nighttime lane closures may occur as well. In addition, Dock Street will have periodic lane restrictions around this intersection until the project is completed by this fall.

Drivers should slow down and be alert when traveling through this work zone.
