Beaufort County Bridge Replacement Requires New Traffic Pattern

WASHINGTON – Lane closures on a U.S. 17 Business bridge in Beaufort County will begin tomorrow and are planned to last for several months.

Beginning Friday morning, lane closures will begin on the bridge over the Pamlico River. Crews will move southbound traffic onto the northbound bridge, so drivers traveling south or north will share the same bridge and have one lane each. Once repairs are finished on the first portion, traffic will then shift to the southbound side.

Traffic is expected to be in this pattern until contract crews can complete repairs to the entire bridge, which is expected to take about four months.

N.C. Department of Transportation asks drivers to seek an alternate route, when possible, to avoid working crews, but if on U.S. 17 Business to slow down and remain alert.
