RALEIGH – Demolition work set to take place as part of the Interstate 440 improvements project will require overnight closures on Western Boulevard most nights over the next few weeks.
Full closures of either direction of Western Boulevard at the Beltline will be in place between midnight and 5 a.m. most weeknights as weather allows and some weekend nights, beginning this week on the eastbound side.
These closures will allow crews to safely demolish the old westbound I-440 bridge over Western Boulevard.
During closures of eastbound Western Boulevard, traffic will be directed to take I-440 West to the Melbourne Road exit to turn around and return to Western Boulevard. The westbound Western Boulevard detour will follow I-440 East to the Hillsborough Street exit to turn around and return to Western Boulevard.
Drivers should slow down when approaching this work zone in the coming weeks and allow extra time for the detours.
