New Construction Closure Coming for Northern Beltway

WINSTON-SALEM – Major construction recently started on a $126 million section of the Winston-Salem Northern Beltway and part of a prominent local road will close on March 13 as part of this work.

A contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation will close High Point Road between Union Cross Road and Glenn Hill Road to begin construction of a new concrete box culvert that will replace the existing culvert that runs under High Point Road.

Along with the culvert construction, major operations including additional grading, bridge construction and roadway development will take place in this area along High Point Road and Interstate 74 and are expected continue through 2026.

Flatiron Constructors, the prime contractor, and its subcontractors started clearing earlier this year. A new interchange will connect Interstate 74 to the 1.5-mile section of the Northern Beltway being built near I-40. This new interchange will have multiple flyover bridges and ramps that cross High Point Road.

NCDOT staff and the contractor will progressively work to reopen High Point Road as soon as possible.

“We are excited to begin working on this section the beltway,” NCDOT Division 9 Engineer Pat Ivey said. “A lot of people have put in a lot of time and effort to build other sections, and it’s exciting to put those efforts into this section.”

The beltway is a multi-lane freeway that will loop around the northern part of Winston-Salem from U.S. 158 in the southwest of downtown to I-74 southeast of downtown. The project will alleviate traffic congestion and increase safety along major arteries in Forsyth County including U.S. 421/Salem Parkway and U.S. 52.

Drivers should remain alert, avoid distractions and obey all posted signs in the work zone and on the detour.
