Wilkes County Bridge to Temporarily Close

WILKESBORO - A contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation will temporarily close a bridge on Browns Ford Road over the Yadkin River next week.

Beginning at 8 a.m. April 10, the bridge approaching Old Highway 268 will close as crews will work to repair erosion under the bridge.

This $70,000 project will also help with future erosion as crews will excavate around the end bent or supports of the bridge, pouring concrete in front while wrapping it around and up the shoulder of the road.

The detour routes are as follows:

  • Starting at the bridge on Browns Ford Road, head north for 1.4 miles to the stoplight and turn right onto U.S. 421 southbound.
    • Travel 3.4 miles to Exit 286 B then turn right onto N.C. 268 West and travel 2.1 miles. Turn right onto Old Highway 268 for .5 miles and Browns Ford Road will be on the right.
  • Starting at the bridge on Browns Ford Road, head south for .1 miles and turn left onto Old Highway 268 for .5 miles.
    • Turn left at the stop sign onto Highway 268 East for 2.2 miles and turn left onto U.S. 421 northbound for 3.6 miles. Turn left at the stoplight onto Browns Ford Road.
Construction is expected to be completed by 3 p.m. April 21, weather permitting.

Motorists are reminded to slow down and use caution when approaching the detour routes.
