18-Month Davidson County Bridge Replacement Starting Next Week

LEXINGTON – An N.C. Department of Transportation contractor will close a portion of road in Davidson County for about 18 months for a bridge replacement project starting next week, weather-permitting.

On May 22 at 9 a.m., Gumtree Road will be closed between Old U.S. 52 and Hebron Church Road to allow Kemp Sigmon Construction, Inc. to safely replace the bridge over the Winston-Salem southbound railroad.

The current bridge was built in 1975 and has reached the end of its usable lifecycle, requiring replacement.

The project is expected to be complete, and the road reopened to traffic by mid-December 2024.

During the closure, traffic will be detoured to Hebron Church Road and Old U.S. 52.  Local traffic will still be able to access residences on either side of the bridge up to the point of closure.

Motorists are advised to plan for delays due to the detour.
