Traffic to Shift Tonight for I-440 Project

RALEIGH – A traffic shift is scheduled for tonight as part of the Interstate 440 improvements project in western Raleigh.

Crews will begin installing lane closures about 9 p.m. and by midnight a full closure will be in place on westbound I-440 at the Wade Avenue interchange. This will allow the crews to safely shift westbound Beltline traffic into a temporary pattern on the new eastbound I-440 bridge.

The ramp from I-440 West to westbound Wade Avenue will remain open during this work and will serve as the detour, sending drivers to the Blue Ridge Road exit to access eastbound Wade Avenue and return to I-440 West until the shift is complete Thursday morning.

The crossover shift is necessary for the upcoming removal of the old westbound I-440 bridge over Wade Avenue. Impacts to traffic will be minimal, with the work taking place overnight and the existing traffic pattern of three lanes on I-440 East and two on the westbound side being maintained throughout the shift.

Drivers should be cautious when approaching this new pattern, obey posted signage, and be mindful of crews throughout the work zone.
