Most of U.S. 64 in Edgecombe County Will be Repaved

TARBORO – About 20 miles of U.S. 64 in Edgecombe County will be resurfaced, thanks to two new contracts totaling $30.5 million.

The two contractors will mill and repave the highway in two segments totaling just over 20 miles. Those segments combined stretch from Kingsboro Road to the Edgecombe-Martin county line, as denoted in the blue line on this Google map.

The work also will include some widening to the paved shoulders and drainage improvements along this same stretch of highway.

The N.C. Department of Transportation awarded the following contracts this month to complete this work:

  • Barnhill Contracting Co. of Rocky Mount for $17.9 million
  • Fred Smith Co. of Raleigh for $12.6 million

The construction can begin this summer, and is scheduled for completion by the fall of 2024.

Drivers can expect to encounter periodic daytime lane closures during construction, so they should be alert traveling through the work zone and heed any reduced speed limits or other warning signs.
