Contract Awarded for Brawley School Road Widening in Iredell County

MOORESVILLE – The N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded a $34.8 million contract to widen a section of Brawley School Road between Interstate 77 and U.S. 21 in Mooresville, about 1.18 miles. The project also includes improvements along U.S. 21 between Dry Dock Loop/Vandalia Road and Abberly Green Blvd.

Contractor Lane Construction Corp. out of Connecticut will perform the work, which includes widening Brawley School Road to a four-lane divided roadway with U-turn bulbs and signalized intersections. The project will also include sidewalks, bike lanes, and a multiuse path along Wilson Avenue.

The Brawley School Road/U.S. 21 intersection will be reconfigured to a reduced conflict intersection, redirecting left turns. Drivers who wish to turn left will first turn right, then use a U-turn bulb a short distance away to head in the opposite direction.

Utility relocation is already underway so the contractor can start construction in spring 2024. Completion is currently scheduled for early 2029.

To minimize impacts to traffic, lane closures will not occur during peak travel times in the mornings and afternoons. Closures are also restricted during holiday travel and other instances when traffic volumes are expected to be higher.
