WILMINGTON – An upcoming weekend marathon that spans several communities in New Hanover County will close some local roadways for safety.
On Feb. 24, approximately 3,500 marathoners will race in the Novant Health Wilmington Marathon. The race begins at Johnny Mercer Pier at 6:30 a.m. and finishes at Riverfront Park around 1 p.m.
For the safety of the runners, event staff and drivers, some roads will be closed throughout the event. To view the race map, visit the race webpage.
If drivers are unable to avoid these parts of New Hanover County Saturday morning, drivers are advised to be alert and drive with caution.
The N.C. Department of Transportation, along with its partners from New Hanover County, City of Wilmington and Town of Wrightsville Beach collaborated to ensure this race could continue and safety remained the top priority. The lane closures of the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge were taken into consideration while planning this year’s route.
