Watauga County Bridge Dedicated to Sgt. Christopher Ward

SUGAR GROVE - N.C. Department of Transportation officials, family, and friends gathered today to dedicate the Watauga River Bridge on U.S. 321 as the Sgt. Christopher D. Ward Bridge.

The bridge dedication honors the memory of Sgt. Ward, who was tragically killed in the line of duty on April 28, 2021 while serving his community and protecting his fellow officers.

Born in 1984, Ward was a member of the Sugar Grove community and attended Watauga High School.

He began his law enforcement career with the Beech Mountain Police Department in 2013 before joining the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office in 2018.

N.C. Governor Roy Cooper sent his personal regards to the family and friends of Ward: “Sergeant Ward died a hero and his sacrifice will not be forgotten, nor will his love and dedication to his family and his community. This bridge will serve as a lasting testament to his memory.”
