FAIRVIEW – N.C. Department of Transportation contract crews will soon start building a roundabout at the intersection of N.C. 218 and Sikes Mill Road, thanks to a $1 million contract awarded earlier this year.
Roundabouts improve safety for drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists. They also help reduce the congestion and backups more typical at traditional intersections with stop signs and traffic signals.
The intersection will close to traffic on Tuesday, June 18 and is anticipated to open by Aug. 21. Vegetation establishment and landscaping can continue into next winter.
Drivers on N.C. 218 will detour along Old Ferry Road and Brief Road, returning to N.C. 218. Drivers on Sikes Mill Road will detour on AGR Nance Road, Carriker Road and Brief Road, returning to Sikes Mill Road.
NCDOT has produced a video showing how roundabouts work and improve overall safety.
