RALEIGH – Contractors with the N.C. Department of Transportation plan to shift traffic from a temporary exit ramp to a permanent one this week as part of the Interstate 440 improvements project.
The existing loop ramp from I-440 East to westbound Wade Avenue is set to close late Friday, about midnight. This closure sets up a transition to a new I-440 East exit ramp to westbound Wade Avenue, which is set to open Saturday or Sunday morning, depending on weather.
Traffic will get to the new ramp by exiting I-440 East at the same location eastbound I-440 to Wade Avenue East currently exits, and then veering left to access westbound Wade Avenue.
With this new ramp coming online, a traffic signal for westbound Wade Avenue that has not been in operation since 2023 will be reactivated. Drivers taking the new ramp from I-440 East to westbound Wade Avenue and those approaching the interchange on westbound Wade Avenue are urged to anticipate the signal and use caution as traffic adjusts to its return.
