N.C. Turnpike Authority Hosts Mock Incident with Local First Responders

First responders practiced responding to a simulated emergency on the extension of Toll N.C. 540.

RALEIGH - The North Carolina Turnpike Authority (NCTA) hosted a mock incident event with 13 partner agencies on August 20, 2024.

NCTA collaborated with local first responders to train and prepare response strategies for Toll N.C. 540. Agencies from Raleigh, Apex, Garner and Fuquay-Varina participated in the exercises. The exercises also included Carolina Air Care providing medical evacuation by helicopter and the Carolina Hazardous Materials Regional Response Team 4 providing hazardous materials support.

“We are happy to host these critical agencies as they work tirelessly to support our communities,” says J.J. Eden, Executive Director of the North Carolina Turnpike Authority. “The soon-to-open 18-mile extension of the Triangle Expressway provides a one-time opportunity for first responders to practice some of the most critical and complex rescue scenarios.”

The extension of Toll N.C. 540 is being constructed in two phases. Phase 1 will extend the Triangle Expressway approximately 18 miles from the existing corridor at N.C. 55 to I-40/U.S. 70 (future I-42). Phase 2 of the project will extend the Triangle Expressway an additional 10 miles from I-40 to the existing I-540/I-87/U.S. 64/U.S. 264 interchange in Knightdale, providing the missing link to complete the 540 loop.
