ASHEVILLE - Drivers on a stretch of Interstate 26 West will be cruising on smooth concrete come Tuesday morning.
A contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation plans to close I-26 West tonight from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. between U.S. 25 (Exit 44) and Long Shoals Road (Exit 37). During the closure, they will shift traffic from new outside lanes to new concrete that has been milled through a diamond-grinding process.
The overnight detour will direct traffic to U.S. 25 North (Hendersonville Road) then Long Shoals Road.
This operation is part of the I-26 widening projects in Buncombe and Henderson County. Shifting traffic to the inside lanes will allow crews from Fluor-United to begin diamond-grinding the outside lanes and complete outstanding operations on the outside lanes and shoulder.
