Dickinson Avenue Improvements Require Additional Closures

GREENVILLE – As the reconstruction of Dickinson Avenue continues, drivers can expect more temporary closures, including these two:

  • The intersection of Dickinson Avenue at 14th Street closed Jan. 14  to upgrade utilities, storm drainage systems and the traffic signal.
  • On Jan. 27, Section 1 of the corridor improvement plan is scheduled to begin, necessitating the avenue to close between Memorial Drive and Moye Boulevard/Hooker Road for approximately seven months. This closure was to begin Jan. 20, but the contractor needed more time to mobilize equipment.

The marked detour for both closures will send drivers onto Evans Street and 10th Street; they should plan their commute accordingly, expect delays and be alert near the work zone.

The work at the intersection of Dickinson Avenue and 14th Street is expected to take up to two months to complete, depending on the weather and whether workers encounter unexpected conflicts with utility lines buried underneath the road. The work at this intersection is located between Sections 4 and 5A on the project timeline graphic.

Corridor Upgrade

The N.C. Department of Transportation is improving 1.3 miles of Dickinson Avenue, a venerable, four-lane corridor near Uptown Greenville. A contractor is working on one section of the corridor at a time, upgrading the drainage systems, repairing the roadway's subgrade and sidewalks, and resurfacing the pavement.

The contractor is nearing completion on upgrading Sections 5A & 5B, which were combined into one segment for work. Those sections are expected to reopen soon.
