CLAYTON – The N.C. Department of Transportation is inviting public feedback on its updated plans to widen and improve N.C. 42 in the Clayton area.
The department will host an open house from 5-7 p.m. on March 5 at The Clayton Center, 111 E. Second St., in Clayton.
The department plans to widen eight miles of N.C. 42 between U.S. 70 Business (Clayton Boulevard) and N.C. 50. The mostly two-lane highway would be widened into four lanes with a raised median. The project would improve safety and traffic flow, reduce delays during rush hour and accommodate expected traffic growth.
The proposed improvements would include reduced conflict intersections, which redirect drivers on some side roads and driveways onto N.C. 42 via right turns to lessen the risk of serious crashes. Additionally, some intersections would have upgraded traffic signals and additional turn lanes, as well as other, innovative designs meant to reduce delays and ease congestion for through traffic.
This will be the department's third open house since 2018 on plans to improve this busy corridor in a fast-growing part of the state. People may drop in at any time during the meeting to see the latest design proposals, as there will not be a formal presentation.
