MONROE – The N.C. Department of Transportation invites the public to learn more about a project aimed to improve safety for drivers and minimize the chance of vehicle-train crashes through the proposed realignment of New Town Road and the closure of an at-grade rail crossing on Fletcher Broome Road in Monroe.
The project proposes to close the existing at-grade railroad crossing on Fletcher Broome Road and realign New Town Road to create a new intersection with N.C. 75 (Waxhaw Highway). The realignment of New Town Road will result in a reconfigured railroad crossing and safer intersection, reducing the crossing's skew. Fletcher Broome Road will also be closed on either side of the railroad tracks.
A public, drop-in style meeting will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, March 13 at Union Academy Charter School, 675 N. MLK Jr. Blvd. People may attend the meeting at any time to discuss the project with NCDOT staff. There will not be a formal presentation. More information and project maps are available on the NCDOT Public Input website that includes a project history and map of the area.
People who cannot attend the meeting may submit comments in writing, by email and by phone. All comments received will be reviewed and considered as the development process continues.
