CHARLOTTE – N.C. Department of Transportation contract crews will start a preservation project next week to the bridge taking Beatties Ford Road over N.C. 16 (Brookshire Freeway) and the CSX Railroad, just north of uptown Charlotte. Contractor Southern Road & Bridge, LLC, earned the $2.3 million contract late last year.
The 53-year-old structure will undergo major preservation work including:
- Repairing the bridge deck, substructure and structural steel
- Replacing bridge joints
- Cleaning and painting existing steel beams
- Applying latex modified concrete
- Repairing sidewalk
Starting Monday, the contractor will close the outside shoulder on N.C. 16 West, with lane closures starting around mid-April. The contract limits lane closures on N.C. 16 and Beatties Ford Road to overnight periods from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. during the week and from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday mornings. Peak travel times should not be affected.
The project is scheduled for completion this summer.
