NCDOT Seeks Public Input on Proposed Onslow County Project

JACKSONVILLE – The N.C. Department of Transportation proposes widening a congested intersection in Jacksonville.

The department has scheduled an April 21 public meeting to display the proposed designs, answer questions and accept comments for improving where Bell Fork Road crosses Country Club Road/Hargett Street.

The open-house style meeting from 5 to 7 p.m. at Bell Fork Elementary School will be informal; people may drop in at any time.

The department plans to add turn lanes, traffic islands, sidewalks and concrete curb and gutters to improve travel flow and safety and reduce delays at this intersection.

The department will be consider comments received through May 12 toward the final design. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2028.

Based on the proposed project, the project would impact about a quarter acre of land that is part of the city of Jacksonville's Rails to Trails Greenway. NCDOT, the Federal Highway Administration and the city have agreed that the proposed project would not have an adverse affect on the greenway or for people using it, and that the proposed design is consistent with local transportation plans.

People may submit questions or comments to the project team by via phone at 984-205-6615, enter project code 11160; email at bellforkrd-jacksonville@publicinput.com; or by visiting NCDOT's public input portal at https://publicinput.com/bellforkrd-jacksonville.

NCDOT will provide auxiliary aids and services under the Americans with Disabilities Act for people who wish to participate in this meeting. Anyone requiring special services should contact Ronald Coleman, Environmental Analysis Unit, at 919-707-7050 or rcoleman2@ncdot.gov as early as possible so arrangements can be made.
