Huntersville Interchange to Temporarily Close This Weekend

HUNTERSVILLE – This weekend, N.C. Department of Transportation contract crews will temporarily close Gilead Road over Interstate 77 to continue work on a new diverging diamond interchange as part of a $30.8 million project to improve safety and mobility in the area.

Crews will close Gilead Road at 10 p.m. Friday night to apply the final lift of surface to the road.

Drivers west of I-77 should take I-77 South to Harris Boulevard, cross the bridge and take I-77 North back to Gilead Road. Drivers east of I-77 should take I-77 North to N.C. 73, cross the bridge and return south on I-77 to get back to Gilead Road.

The road will reopen to traffic by 6 a.m. Monday, May 5. Law enforcement will be on site to assist with traffic control and ensure safety.

Once the project is complete, the interchange will operate similarly to these diverging diamond interchanges in the area:

  • I-485 at Mallard Creek Road
  • I-85 at Poplar Tent Road
  • I-85 at N.C. 73
  • I-77 at Catawba Avenue
