This Week at NCDOT: Conen Morgan Interchange, Real ID, Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.

Conen Morgan Interchange Dedication

This week, the North Carolina Department of Transportation along with state and local officials dedicated the Interchange at I-440 and Capital Boulevard in Raleigh in honor of political strategist, Conen Morgan.

Morgan, a graduate of Garner Magnet High School and N.C. State University, was known statewide for his pivotal role in helping numerous political candidates win public office.

His contributions earned him multiple honors, including the Order of the Long Leaf Pine awarded in 2023 by Governor Cooper.

Morgan died in a tragic boating accident off the coast of North Carolina in 2023. His name will now live on as a permanent part of Raleigh’s infrastructure, honoring his lifelong commitment to public service and community empowerment.

Real ID Implementation Date

The Real ID implementation date is almost here! If you do not have a passport or other form of federal identification, a Real ID will be required to fly commercially beginning May 7. But getting a Real ID is completely optional, and you can still get a Real ID after the implementation date passes.

If you wish to get a Real ID but you already have a passport, we recommend waiting until later in the year to get your Real ID to avoid long lines at the DMV.

Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

May is National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. In North Carolina, motorcycles represent about 2% of all registered vehicles, but account for about 10% of all fatalities on the state's roads.

Proper training and safety precautions are the most effective ways to reduce the chances of being involved in a motorcycle crash.

Safety guidelines for motorcyclists include wearing a DOT compliant helmet, making sure you are properly licensed, and obeying all traffic safety laws. Other drivers should remember to stay alert and watch for motorcyclists, and remember to share the road so we all get home safe!
