Traffic Shift Coming to U.S. 601 Project

YADKINVILLE – N.C. Department of Transportation contract crews will implement a change to the traffic pattern on South State Street (U.S. 601) starting Tuesday as the project to improve safety, congestion and utilities near U.S. 421 continues.

Crews from Blythe Construction of Charlotte will close the southbound right lane between West Maple Street and Sharon Drive and a new pattern will be formed on the northbound side between Beroth Drive and Lee Avenue, featuring a single through lane and center turn lane. This lane reduction and new traffic pattern is expected to be in place through the end of 2025.

The $19.8 million contract includes four roundabouts and a new median, improved intersections, and upgraded storm water and utilities on U.S. 601 between Sharon Drive and Lee Avenue. The four roundabouts will be built to ease congestion at the U.S. 421 ramps and the intersections with Maple Street and Lee Avenue. A new median will separate north and south traffic.

At least one lane of traffic will remain open in each direction on U.S. 601 for the duration of construction, and much of the stormwater and utility construction will continue within the long-term closure. Any other work in travel lanes will occur from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. to minimize travel impacts.

Access will remain open to all businesses during construction, and the estimated completion date of this project is by fall of 2027.
