This Week at NCDOT: Rainy Weather Driving, Pedestrian and Bike Safety, 2025 Transportation Summit

RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.

Rainy Weather Driving

Recent storms and flooding brought significant impacts to our roadways, and the N.C. Department of Transportation is providing tips on how to drive safely in wet conditions.

NCDOT urges drivers to slow down, use headlights and never drive through flooded roads. Drivers should also increase following distance, avoid sudden braking and if visibility is low, and pull over safely until conditions improve.

People can check road conditions before traveling at DriveNC.gov.

Pedestrian and Bike Safety

NCDOT continues to identify areas in the state where pedestrian and bike safety can be improved.

Recently, Thomas Chase, a senior traffic safety project engineer for the Department, completed a study to look at one location in Fayetteville where there's been almost a dozen pedestrian-related crashes in five years.

NCDOT extended sidewalks, installed pedestrian signals, and added marked crosswalks.

The result, after the safety improvements, one pedestrian-related crash over five years. Within the added crosswalks, there was a 100% decrease in pedestrians being struck.

The Department makes these kinds of pedestrian safety improvements to dozens of intersections across the state every year. Chase said NCDOT wants to find the safest, most cost-effective solution for each location.

2025 Transportation Summit

NCDOT will soon host the 2025 N.C. Transportation Summit. The 5th Transportation Summit will be held Sept. 3-4 at the Raleigh Convention Center.
