RALEIGH – The N.C. Turnpike Authority’s submission was selected in the Southern Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (SASHTO) region. The Triangle Expressway extension is one of 113 nominations from 35 state DOTs in this year’s overall competition. Sponsored by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), the America’s Transportation Awards highlights transportation projects that deliver meaningful community benefits.

“Innovation for us means fewer dollars necessary for construction, fewer environmental impacts and more time back in lives of our drivers," said James “JJ" Eden, Executive Director, North Carolina Turnpike Authority. “This project captures the best of what is possible in North Carolina – engineering expertise, technological innovations and real community partners."

The Johnston County Economic Development Office, Wake Tech Community College, Regional Transportation Alliance, and the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization provided testimonials in support of the Triangle Expressway Extension nomination. By winning at the regional level, the project will advance to compete for a national award from the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.

The southeast extension of the Triangle Expressway extends the project approximately 18 miles from the existing corridor at N.C. 55 to I-40/U.S. 70 (future I-42). This portion of the roadway opened to traffic on Sept. 25, 2024. The project is transformative infrastructure designed to enhance mobility, reduce congestion and support planned regional growth in the Raleigh area. Rigorous synchronization throughout design and construction ensured all 18 miles opened simultaneously in September 2024. The all-electronic toll road provides a seamless connection between southern Wake County and key transportation corridors, including I-40 and US 401. The project integrated innovative traffic management, sustainable environmental solutions and modern interchange designs to improve safety and efficiency for both local commuters and long-distance travelers.
