BUXTON – The N.C. Department of Transportation has closed N.C. 12 south of the Marc Basnight Bridge to Hatteras Village in Dare County tonight due to extensive ocean overwash and dune breaches from Hurricane Erin. The highway is also closed on the north end of Ocracoke Island between the National Park Service Pony Pens and the Ferry Terminal
Overwashed areas include the area north of Hatteras Village, Buxton, and Rodanthe. Conditions are too unsafe for motorists, and the high tide cycles for Thursday are forecast to be even more severe.
Road crews will be working to clear what they can and monitor the morning high tide for more overwash issues. The highway will remain closed until it is deemed safe to reopen.
