RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.
LABOR DAY BOOZE IT & LOSE IT
The annual "Booze It & Lose It" campaign uses amplified outreach and enforcement efforts to keep impaired drivers off the road during one of the busiest travel times of the year.
Now through Sept. 7, drivers in all 100 counties can expect to see an increase in law enforcement patrols and checkpoints.
And to accommodate holiday travel this weekend, most construction on interstates and state routes will be suspended through Sept. 2.
HURRICANE ERIN
Hurricane Erin did not make landfall on the East Coast, but N.C. 12 was closed in several locations on Aug. 20 after severe ocean overwash from the storm inundated the highway. Several ferry routes were also closed.
On Aug. 25, the last stretch of N.C. 12 was reopened and service resumed on the final closed ferry.
CHAPEL HILL INTERCITY BUS STOP
The department's intercity bus service has a new bus stop in Chapel Hill.
Operated by Greyhound, the service makes four passenger stops each day at the Eubanks Road Park and Ride Lot.
