MATTHEWS – The N.C. Department of Transportation recently awarded an $8.7 million contract to improve a half-mile section of Idlewild Road between Interstate 485 and Stallings Road.
Contractor J.T. Russell and Sons Inc. will widen Idlewild Road from its current two-lane pattern to a four-lane divided facility. Stallings Road will be realigned to intersect with Idlewild Road further away from I-485, and a dual lane roundabout will be built at the intersection between the two roads. The project will also add pedestrian facilities like crosswalks and sidewalks.
The contractor can start as soon as the end of this month, with completion scheduled for the fall of 2026. Vegetation establishment can continue into the spring of 2027.
Lane closures may be required and will be restricted to non -peak travel times Monday-Friday. All travel lanes are expected to be open during morning and afternoon commutes.
