Work Continues on Elk River Road Bridge Replacement

BOONE – N.C. Department of Transportation contract crews will close part of an Avery County road next week to continue construction of a replacement bridge over Elk River.

Crews will build the main support structure for a bridge on Elk River Road beginning Monday, Sept. 15. The work requires daytime closures on Elk River Road near Falls Landing Lane through Sept. 19.

Non-local traffic is encouraged to avoid the bridge, which is just before Elk River Falls. Flaggers will allow drivers through the work zones when possible, but wait times could be extended.

James R. Vannoy & Sons Construction Company Inc. earned the $2.6 million contract to replace this bridge after Hurricane Helene destroyed the original structure. The project is expected to finish in fall 2026.
