N.C. 12 Closed on the North End of Ocracoke Island

OCRACOKE – The N.C. Department of Transportation has closed N.C. 12 on the north end of Ocracoke Island between the National Park Service Pony Pens and the ferry terminal due to deteriorating travel conditions. As a result, ferry service between Hatteras and Ocracoke islands has been suspended until further notice.

Humberto and Imelda remain offshore in the Atlantic. But ocean overwash from the storms has breached the dune line and pushed deep sand and water onto the road. Transportation crews will work to clear N.C. 12 once conditions are safe, but officials estimate the road will remain closed until at least Thursday morning.

Motorists can monitor road conditions throughout the coast on DriveNC.gov. Ferry passengers can sign up for text or email updates on schedule interruptions at ncdot.gov/fins.
