LIBERTY – A new phase of the construction of an interchange with U.S. 421 near the Toyota battery plant will begin next week with a temporary road closure.
A contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation plans to close Shiloh Road at its southern intersection with U.S. 421 beginning Monday morning. The closure, which will last about two months, is needed for crews to safely work on the ramps and loops and to shift the highway into its permanent configuration.
The crews first plan to shift the highway's southbound lanes from their temporary pattern onto the new alignment over the new bridge. This shift is tentatively set to take place Oct. 30, weather permitting.
Then, they will similarly shift the northbound lanes to their new alignment on the new bridge about two weeks later, or by mid-November. After this shift is made, workers will remove the temporary detours, and do paving and other tie-in work for the ramps and loops. Drivers should slow down and be alert as they adjust to these new traffic patterns.
Shiloh Road is scheduled to reopen at its southern junction with U.S. 421 by mid-December. The interchange and its roundabouts at the on/off ramps are expected to fully open by next spring.
This is the second U.S. 421 interchange being built near the Toyota battery plant; the first one opened last summer to the north at Julian Airport Road.
