ELLERBE – Grassy Island Road is scheduled to close starting Monday morning to replace its bridge near the Richmond-Anson county border.
A state highway contractor will replace the 61-year-old structure over Colemans Creek. The bridge is nearing its lifespan: While the bridge has been maintained for safety, its components require more maintenance, and it no longer meets today's traffic or current design standards.
The signed detour will send drivers onto Grassy Island Road, Hough Road, N.C. 73 and Cartledge Creek Road.
The road is scheduled to reopen when the bridge is completed by next May. Drivers should be mindful of the longer commute using the detour and cautious near the work site.
