Two Lee County Highways Getting Repaved

SANFORD – Sections of U.S. 1 and U.S. 421 in Lee County will be milled and resurfaced, thanks to a $3.6 million contract awarded this week by the N.C. Department of Transportation.

The sections to be improved are:

  • U.S. 421 from the Chatham-Lee County line to north of this highway's interchange with U.S. 1/15/501 for a distance of 3.6 miles.

  • U.S. 1 from the Moore-Lee County line to Wildlife Road for a distance of 4 miles.

The repaving will include the various ramps and loops for the U.S. 421 and Business 421 interchange north of Sanford.

The work also will include installing high-visibility thermoplastic lane markings and rumble strips to alert drivers who may drift out of their lane.

The Wilson-based contractor, S.T. Wooten Corp., may begin this winter, and will have until the summer of 2027 to complete all of the improvements.
