This Week at NCDOT: Sen. Thomas F. Taft Sr. Highway, Patrolman Willams Bridge, End of Hurricane Season

RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.

Sen. Thomas F. Taft Sr. Highway

A section of a Pitt County highway is now named after former North Carolina Senator Thomas F. Taft Sr.

The N.C. Department of Transportation joined local and state officials to dedicate a portion of the N.C. 11 Southwest Bypass to Taft. Taft is a native of Greenville and devoted over 50 years in civic and public service to North Carolina, Pitt County and Greenville.

“Tom, this dedication is an excellent way to recognize and honor your many contributions to North Carolina, Pitt County and Greenville over the years. Thank you for your service and congratulations,” said Gov. Josh Stein during his remarks at Taft’s dedication.

He served three terms in the North Carolina Senate, where he focused on economic development, secondary and post-secondary education, transportation and environmental protection.

Patrolman Paul Williams Bridge

NCDOT also dedicated a portion of N.C. 55 over Upper Broad Creek at the Pamlico/Craven County line to the late Patrolman Paul Williams.

Patrolman Williams worked with the State Highway Patrol for two years before he was killed in the line of duty in November 1970, when his vehicle crashed during a pursuit in Pamlico County.

End of 2025 Hurricane Season

The 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season ends Nov. 30. Hurricane Erin brought significant overwash and flooding to the Outer Banks and Tropical Storm Chantal made landfall in the Piedmont.

While most repairs from these storms are complete, recovery work remains underway for some roads. Be sure to check out DriveNC.gov for updates on these closures and all other travel impacts across the state.
