THOMASVILLE – A long-term traffic shift is coming for U.S. 29/U.S. 70 near the Old Thomasville Road interchange.
Contract crews for the state Transportation Department will shift the U.S. 29/U.S. 70 southbound traffic onto the newly built northbound bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railroad tracks. This shift will allow the southbound bridge to be demolished and rebuilt.
This change will be implemented overnight Wednesday during a slow-moving operation that reduces the speed of traffic, so drivers should be alert in this work zone.
After the shift is completed by Thursday morning, the northbound bridge will carry one lane in each direction until the project is completed next summer.
In addition, this traffic shift will require people who live off Albertson and Hasty School roads to detour onto N.C. 68 to Pleasant Grove Church Road until the southbound lanes are reopened next summer.
Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, remain cautious and expect potential delays due to detour routes.
