LEXINGTON – Drivers today will encounter a traffic shift on U.S. 29/ U.S. 70 (Business Interstate 85) near the Old Highway 64 junction.
Workers will shift the U.S. 29 North/U.S. 70 East traffic across the median and onto the southbound side between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. today.
The work will utilize slow-rolling operations to pace northbound traffic through the project and allow for the realignment of the current pavement markings. These operations will proceed slowly through the work zone and allow for any traffic congestion to decrease before crews make another slow-rolling pass.
Traffic on U.S. 29/U.S. 70 already has been reduced to one lane in each direction while a contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation replaces the Old Highway 64 (West 5th Avenue) bridge spanning the highway.
Drivers should be alert and heed any traffic signs and other instructions during this traffic shift, which will necessitate on Friday the exit ramp from U.S. 29 North/U.S. 70 East to Old Highway 64 to close until the new bridge is completed by the spring of 2027.
The detour for the closed exit will send drivers onto West Center Street, then South Main Street and onto West 5th Avenue.
