MANTEO – The Sarah Owens Welcome Center/Rest Area on U.S. 64 on Roanoke Island will temporarily close to the public beginning Dec. 31 for a renovation project.
The $1.4 million contract, awarded to the A.R. Chesson Company of Elizabeth City, will include the upgrading and installation of electrical, HVAC and plumbing systems, as well as general construction and landscaping in and around the welcome center building.
The project is expected to be complete by mid-May.
Alternate state welcome centers and rest stops can be found at the Aycock Brown Welcome Center on U.S. 158 in Kitty Hawk, and at the Tyrrell County Welcome Center on U.S. 64 in Columbia.
