CANTON – One of two lanes along Interstate 40 East will close next week from 9 p.m. Monday night until Thursday afternoon.
A contractor for the N.C. Department of Transportation is closing a lane from mile marker 29 to Champion Drive (Exit 31) to shift traffic to a temporary bridge on I-40 over Incinerator Road.
In addition, crews will utilize the closure to pave along the shoulders of I-40 near Thickety Road, mile marker 29, for future traffic shifts related to the bridge replacement over Thickety Road.
Drivers should anticipate delays, especially during times with heavy traffic, plan ahead and adjust scheduling or routes. Drivers may utilize U.S. 19/23 through Canton as an alternate route.
The two bridge replacement projects are updating structures that have reached the end of their service life. The new structures are being built to modern standards with an anticipated life span of at least 50 years.
