Innovative Crosswalk Technology Active in Pitt County

GREENVILLE – A new pedestrian crosswalk signal using innovative safety technology is now active on East Tenth Street in Greenville.

The Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon (PHB), formerly “HAWK” signal, assists pedestrians at marked crosswalks to safely cross with minimal disruption to drivers. It also aids drivers approaching the intersection with flashing lights indicating when a pedestrian is attempting to cross.

The signal is located on East Tenth Street near Anderson Street over the roadway. The signal was first activated on Dec. 19.

Motorists should use caution when approaching the new traffic signal and follow these instructions:

  • Flashing yellow – slow down as a pedestrian has activated the push button

  • Solid yellow – prepare to stop if it is safe to do so

  • Solid red – drivers must stop as a pedestrian is in the crosswalk

  • Flashing red – drivers should treat this as a stop sign, checking that the pedestrian has finished crossing before proceeding

Check out this video demonstrating how to use the Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon.
