This Week at NCDOT: Winter Weather, Traffic Signal Safety, Highway Dedication

RALEIGH–The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.

Winter Weather
Roads are being brined, weather conditions are being continuously monitored, and trucks and materials are in place to respond as snow and ice develops.

People should get any supplies they need before the storm arrives and stay off the roads once the winter weather gets to your area. This storm could make travel treacherous for several days across much of North Carolina.

If you absolutely must travel, be sure to slow down and maintain a safe following distance between you and other vehicles.

Check drivenc.gov for the latest traffic information and visit NCDOT's website for more winter weather tips.

Traffic Signal Safety
This winter storm has the potential to knock out power across North Carolina and that could impact traffic signals.

If you approach an intersection where the traffic lights are out or flashing, proceed with caution as if the intersection is controlled by an all-way stop.

Highway Dedication
A portion of U.S. 74 in Jackson County between Bradley Branch Road and Exit 81A now bears the name of the late Charles Ray Elders.

Elders was a longtime Jackson County Commissioner and served several presidential terms on the Selective Service System after he was appointed by President George H.W. Bush.
