CHARLOTTE – As winter weather moves into the region, the
I‑485 Express Lanes construction team is taking precautionary safety measures along the corridor.
Earlier today, crews temporarily removed the tarps covering the overhead signs located above the future express lanes. This action has been taken to prevent the tarps from becoming heavy or hazardous for drivers during the winter weather event. Following the end of the weather event, construction crews will re-cover the signs until the official opening in late February.
While the tarps are removed and moving forward, the toll rate dynamic messaging signs will temporarily display messages that indicate the express lanes are closed. These messages are intended solely for safety and testing purposes.
The public is reminded that:
- The I‑485 Express Lanes remain under construction.
- The express lanes are not scheduled to open to traffic until late February 2026.
- The temporary toll rate sign messaging is scheduled to remain in place until the express lanes open to traffic in late February 2026.
- Following the end of the weather event, construction crews will re-cover the overhead signs until the express lanes open to traffic in late February 2026.
Motorists traveling through the corridor are urged to continue following all posted signage, stay alert in the construction zone and avoid entering any closed express lanes or shoulders.
The project team appreciates the public’s patience as crews work to maintain a safe environment for drivers and workers during this period of inclement weather.
